6 WAYS TO STAY MOTIVATED WHILE WFH
6 WAYS TO STAY MOTIVATED WHILE WFH

Most people find working from home to be challenging—especially at first. From piles of dirty laundry to day time TV, there are tons of distractions. Whether you’re home alone and the house is too quiet, or you’re home with the family and the kids are out of control, you may find it’s tough to stay on task, get your work done, and feel productive.

Over time, I’ve found what has worked for me and I’d love to share with you my strategies to help you stay motivated.

1. Start Your Day Right
Invest in time for yourself first thing in the morning. Try to wake up at the same time each morning and do all the things you would typically do to get ready for work. This will help set our mind and body to a routine that improves productivity. Whether it’s meditation, going for a run or at-home workout. Personally, I make sure to have a healthy and hearty breakfast. Starting your day right sets the tone for the rest of your day.

2. Eliminate Distractions
Start by setting up your workstation properly. Living in an apartment myself, I understand not everyone will have space for a dedicated study room. However, there are many adjustable furniture pieces like fold-up desks that are ideal for apartments. Pick a spot with plenty of natural light and away from distractions like your TV. It also helps to turn off social media notifications and have your personal phone on silent.

3. Reward Yourself
Break up your day into sections. Personally, I like to clock in a solid 3 hours of work and then reward myself with 30 minutes of what makes me tick, and repeat. It could be an episode of your favourite tv show, a chapter of the book you’re reading or stepping into your balcony for some fresh air and vitamin D. The key is to hold credibility to yourself so that the reward is truly earned.

4. Stay Connected
Stay proactively in touch with others rather than waiting for someone to reach out. Get in touch with your family, friends and colleagues during this time of isolation. Social distancing does not equal to social disconnecting. With my friends and family, I like to switch calls to video chats to feel more connected to loved ones.

5. Upskill Yourself
Take the opportunity to learn a new skill with the extra time we have at home. It can be a language that you’ve always wanted to learn, that cake you’ve always wanted to bake or even trying something a little artier, like painting. For myself, I’m currently learning how to dance from YouTube videos. It’s a great way to stay active and hopefully, it’ll help me to become more coordinated!

6. Recharge
Sleep can be just as important as regular exercise and a healthy diet. It has also proven to boost our immunity, something we all need right now. Getting quality 8 hours of sleep can do wonders with both your mental and physical wellbeing and ties in perfectly with our first tip. By waking up feeling fresh and recharged will keep you alert and motivated.

I know working-from-home may not be for everyone, but this is a time we need to be resilient, support each other and remind ourselves how we made it through the first time and we can do it again. Just remember, we are in this together and we will get through this together.
